Baby Steps towards Baby Led Weaning

We first started E on rice cereal. Then it progressed to sweet potato, butternut squash, peas, bananas, apples and pears. It was/is A LOT prep work to puree and pack and freeze all of his solids and although it's hilarious trying to feed him while he has a vice grip with his feet on my hands (prior to us getting him a high chair) - I'm starting to lean more and more towards Baby Led Weaning.  So I started giving him a banana, cut in half, with 3/4 of the peel still on so he could hold it. And guess what? He LOVED it! I've been trying out different things to see how he reacts to it: cucumber, tomato, carrot - and I'm really looking forward to all the new foods he will be able to feed himself. There's a great post by Baby Love's Ella on BLW- check it out!!

  1. Aw, thanks Wendy!

I didn't know if you'd see my response in the comments on my blog post or not, so I'll answer your question here, too...

The food you offer should still be cooked, so it's soft enough for baby to gum. Most steamed foods are firm enough to hold onto when cut into "finger-like" pieces. Some raw foods can be a choking hazard (raw carrots, for example).

So glad you're finding that "baby steps" toward BLW is working out for you and your sweet munchkin. Those photos are soooo adorable! What a sweet boy.

  2. Thank you so much for posting this! I was just thinking this morning that I probably need to stop with the purees and start with the finger-foods. We also started with giving her bites of banana, but it's been me holding it for her (or I should say, her asking to eat my breakfast while I'm nursing her). But we head to Hawaii at the end of July, and I'd love to be able to go without a suitcase full of purees! Don't get me wrong--I've loved making my own foods (purees), but you're right--it's a lot of work.
