MIL update

Earlier this year, I wrote about the sudden news of my MIL having breast cancer. Since the surgery, she was recovering well - but a few weeks back during her checkup, it was revealed that the type of cancer she had was the aggressive kind. What they thought was a year's worth of growth was in actuality only approx 6 months.

After doing a full body scan and thankfully not finding anything, the doctor still felt that they should be proactive about the treatment and start chemo and radiation therapy to fully eliminate any trace of it.  She's been through 1 treatment since and every 21 days, another one - ongoing for a total of 18 treatments.  She has started losing some of her hair, so yesterday, DH and one of my SILs went over and helped her do a clean shave.

I decided not to go b/c 1) I would break down and start crying and 2) I thought that something so personal should be shared with her children.

DH came home in a bit of a numb state and said that he was ok- but I know he is just trying to be strong for everyone.

I am scared and worried but I am also hopeful that these treatments will help eradicate this horrible thing and she will be in remission for a long long time.

I know I've asked a lot of you all to pray for me and lil' bean already but please keep my MIL in your prayers too. She is such a strong woman and even though these treatments will run her down physically, I pray that her fight and passion for life will remain strong.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30

  1. Oh Wendy...my own MIL is here visiting as I write this, which makes it even more potent. Thank you for this update. I will continue to pray for her, you, and your husband (as well as your little one). I pray that God give her the strength to persist to celebrate the birth and many birthdays to come. God bless!

  2. My mother had breast cancer and when she shaved her head, it was a crazy experience. She looked so small and helpless. She wore a wig while she was taking treatments.

But when it grew back, she was beautiful! She had a buzzcut and it was all white. She looked like she could take on the world! She eventually started dying it and it grew back to her old style. I sometimes miss my mom with the buzzcut!

I'll keep your MIL in my prayers.

  6. That's rough. I'll keep all three of you in my prayers.

When my cousin and I were in college, he got Lymphoma from his anti-rejection drugs from his liver transplant. He had me shave his head for him when he started chemo. I bawled like a baby. He joked through the entire shave and after. He sure made me feel better about it! Thankfully that was seven years ago, and now he is fine!

  7. So sorry to hear. My mother has lymphoma and it is very hard. We always shave her hair off during treatment. The first time I bought her a beautiful black scarf to wear around her head, which she loved.

Thinking of you and your family.

  10. My dad went through cancer treatments as well. It is so hard to stand by watching and not be able to do anything. You both have my thoughts.
